Plumbing quote calculator: VAT and CIS
See the quote your customer pays and the money that lands in your account. VAT, the domestic reverse charge and CIS at 20% or 30% are worked out for you.
How it works
- Labour = hours × people × hourly rate, plus any out-of-hours uplift. Materials = your cost × (1 + markup).
- VAT at 20% is added if you are VAT registered.
- Reverse charge: on CIS work for a VAT-registered contractor who is not the end user, you do not charge the VAT. The contractor accounts for it to HMRC, so the invoice total excludes it.
- CIS is deducted from everything except VAT and the cost of your materials. Your markup on materials counts as labour for CIS, so it is deducted from too.
You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. CIS only applies when a contractor pays you for construction work, including plumbing and heating; a homeowner paying for their own house is never a CIS contractor. A contractor who deducts CIS must give you a payment and deduction statement, and that deduction counts towards your tax bill.

Questions
Is CIS deducted from materials?
Not from what the materials cost you. HMRC lets the contractor leave out the cost of materials, and VAT, before working out the deduction. Any markup you add on materials is treated as labour, so CIS is taken from that part.
When does the domestic reverse charge apply?
When you are VAT registered, the job is CIS-reportable, and your customer is a VAT-registered contractor who is not the end user. You write "Reverse charge: customer to account to HMRC for the VAT" on the invoice instead of charging VAT.
What if I have gross payment status?
Pick the 0% option. With gross payment status the contractor pays you in full and you settle tax through Self Assessment or Corporation Tax.
