How UK decorators price their work
Day rate or per room
Quote a three-bedroom repaint as days on site at your day rate, or as fixed prices per room, hallway, landing and stairs. Both views sit on one quote.
New plaster, done properly
A mist coat line for fresh plaster, extra coats for strong colour changes and an undercoat for bare woodwork, so the specification is clear before you start.
Papering counted in rolls
Wall height and width to the number of rolls, with pattern repeat allowed for, plus lining paper and paste.
Tax and paperwork
The UK edition follows HMRC rules for VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme.
- VAT
- Only charged if you are registered: 20%, compulsory above £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12 months.
- CIS
- Painting and decorating is a construction operation. A main contractor deducts 20%, or 30% if you are unregistered, from the labour part of your invoice.
- Domestic reverse charge
- For CIS work billed to a VAT-registered contractor who is not the end user, no VAT is charged on the invoice and the reverse charge note is shown.
- Homeowners
- Domestic customers never deduct CIS. You invoice the full amount, plus VAT if you are registered.

What should a decorator's day rate cover?
Your labour, travel, insurance, van, tools and a margin. The price book works back from what you need to earn a year to a day rate.
Do I need to add VAT for homeowners?
Only if you are VAT registered. Below the threshold you must not add VAT.
How many rolls of wallpaper for a room?
A standard UK roll is 10 m by 0.53 m. Divide the wall perimeter by the roll width to get drops, then see how many drops each roll gives at your wall height and repeat.
Does it do exterior work?
Yes. Add masonry, fascias, soffits and windows as surfaces with their own rates and access costs.
