- Sales tax
- Rules differ by state. In many states a roofer on a lump-sum residential job pays tax on materials and does not add it to the bill; others, such as Washington, tax the whole contract price. Pick your method once.
- Licensing
- Several states license roofers separately; elsewhere a general contractor licence or local registration covers it. Your licence number prints on every estimate.
- Permits
- Most cities want a permit for a full re-roof. The estimate has a permit line so it is never forgotten.
- Code limits
- Many codes allow no more than two layers of shingles, which is why the overlay option checks how many layers are already on the roof.

How many bundles are in a square?
Three bundles cover one square (100 sq ft) for most three-tab and architectural shingles. Some heavy designer shingles need four or five, so the takeoff lets you change it.
What waste factor should I use?
Around 10% on a simple gable roof and 15% or more on cut-up roofs with hips, valleys and dormers. The calculator shows both so you can choose.
Do I charge sales tax on a roof replacement?
It depends on your state and on how the contract is written. Check with your state's department of revenue; the template supports both tax on materials only and tax on the full price.
