Tax and paperwork
The Canada edition follows the sales tax rules for the province you work in.
- GST/HST
- 5% GST, or HST at 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI. Registration is required once revenue passes $30,000 over four quarters.
- PST and QST
- Quebec adds 9.975% QST. In BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba a contractor usually pays PST on materials installed into a home rather than charging it on labour.
- Workers' comp
- Roofing is a high-rate class with WSIB in Ontario, WorkSafeBC and the other provincial boards. Clearance certificates are often asked for before work starts.
- Quebec licence
- Roofers working in Quebec need an RBQ licence, and the number belongs on the contract.

Which tax do I charge on a re-roof in Ontario?
13% HST on the full price if you are registered. Below the $30,000 small-supplier threshold you may stay unregistered and charge none.
How far up the roof should ice and water shield go?
Many Canadian codes ask for eave protection to reach a set distance inside the warm wall line, often around 900 mm. The template uses whatever your local code requires.
Can I quote in square metres?
