How UK floor fitters price a job
Carpet by the roll width
Carpet comes in 4 m and 5 m widths, so the takeoff works out the cut length and the waste for each room rather than simply multiplying area.
Prep that floors depend on
Uplift and disposal, latex smoothing compound, ply overlay and damp-proof membrane priced per m², because the finish is only as good as the floor beneath it.
Door bars and thresholds
Every doorway and change of floor gets a threshold strip, counted and priced, so the last day on site is not a trip to the merchant.
Tax and paperwork
The UK edition follows HMRC rules for VAT and construction work.
- VAT
- Add 20% only once you are registered; registration is compulsory past £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12 months.
- CIS
- Fitting floors for a main contractor on a building project can be CIS work, with 20% or 30% deducted from your labour. Fitting for homeowners is not.
- Domestic reverse charge
- On CIS work for a VAT-registered contractor who is not the end user, the invoice shows no VAT and a reverse charge note.
- Tiling standards
- Floor tiling should follow BS 5385; the job sheet records substrate, adhesive and the movement joints used.
