How it works

  • Direct cost = equipment + materials + crew hours × labour cost + permit and disposal.
  • Price = direct cost ÷ (1 − target margin).
  • GST or HST is charged on the whole price at your province's rate. QST is added in Quebec.
  • In BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, PST on installed equipment is usually paid by you at purchase, so that box starts at 0.

GST/HST applies to installation labour and equipment alike once you are registered (required above $30,000 in taxable sales over four consecutive quarters). Gas work needs a licensed gas technician, for example a TSSA G2 or G1 in Ontario, and refrigerant work needs your province's ozone-depleting substances certification; those courses and renewals belong in your overhead.

Questions

How do I price a cold-climate heat pump install?

Start from the real direct cost: the heat pump and air handler or coil, line set, pad or wall brackets, electrical, permit and the full crew time, including commissioning. Then apply the margin your overhead needs. Any homeowner rebate is paid to the homeowner and does not change your price.

Margin or markup?

Margin. If your overhead is 28% of sales and you want 12% profit, you need a 40% gross margin, which is a 66.7% markup on cost.

Does Quebec QST apply to HVAC installs?

Yes. QST at 9.975% applies to most construction services in Quebec, along with 5% GST.
