Electrician labour rate calculator
Work out the hourly and day rate your electrical business needs, with super for yourself, your ute and insurance, and GST on top if you are registered.
How it works
- Super: sole traders don't have to pay themselves super, but if you want to match an employee's 12% Super Guarantee, leave it in.
- Yearly cost = your pay + super + staff + overheads.
- Charge-out rate = yearly cost ÷ billable hours ÷ (1 − profit margin). Day rate = hourly rate × hours in your day (7.6 for a standard 38-hour week).
- Inc GST adds 10% if you are registered.
GST registration is required once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year. If you employ an apprentice, their wage, super, workers' compensation and award allowances all go in the staff line. Income tax is not included; set your pay target with it in mind.

Questions
What should a sparky charge per hour?
It depends on your state, your work and your costs. Use this to find the rate that pays you properly, then compare it with local rates. Many tradies quote small jobs with a call-out fee plus time, which lets the hourly rate stay competitive.
Do I include GST in my rate?
Quote homeowners the price inc GST, because consumer law requires the total price. To builders, quote ex GST with GST shown. This calculator gives both.
What about my licence and insurance?
Put your contractor licence renewal, public liability and any income protection in overheads. They are real costs of every billable hour.
