Snowball vs avalanche in one minute

Both methods pay the minimum on every debt and put all extra money on one target debt. When it is paid off, its payment rolls onto the next. The only difference is the order:

What the example in this template shows

With six made-up debts totalling $34,100 and $300 extra per month, the planner computes 38 months to debt-free with the snowball and 37 with the avalanche, and the avalanche saves $274.23 in interest. Both clear a first debt in month 3. Your numbers will differ; the sheet recalculates as soon as you type yours.

What to type in

  1. Each debt's current balance, interest rate (APR) and minimum payment.
  2. The extra amount you can pay each month on top of all minimums.
  3. Then read the Plan tab: debt-free month, total interest and payoff order for both methods.

The schedules assume monthly interest at APR ÷ 12 and the same payments every month. Real statements can differ slightly (daily interest, fees, rate changes). Not financial advice.
